How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player puzzle game using 144 tiles. The goal: remove all tiles from the board by matching identical pairs.

1

Find a free tile

A tile is free if at least one side (left or right) is open and no tiles are stacked on top of it.

2

Click to select

Click any free tile to select it. Click again to deselect.

3

Match a pair

Click a second free tile with the same symbol to remove both from the board.

4

Clear the board

Keep matching pairs until all 144 tiles are removed. Clear the board to win!

Special tile rules

Flower tiles (梅 蘭 菊 竹) — any flower matches any other flower. Season tiles (春 夏 秋 冬) — any season matches any other season. All other tiles must match exactly.

Understanding the Mahjong Tiles

Characters (萬子)
Tiles 1–9 representing 10,000 copper coins. Marked with Chinese numerals and 萬.
Circles (筒子)
Tiles 1–9 depicted as circular coins. One of the most recognisable suits.
🎋
Bamboo (索子)
Tiles 1–9 shown as bamboo stalks, representing strings of coins.
Winds (風牌)
East, South, West, North — four tiles each, must match exactly.
Dragons (三元牌)
Red (中), Green (發), White (白) — four tiles each.
Flowers & Seasons
Eight bonus tiles. Any flower matches any flower; any season matches any season.

Mahjong Strategy Tips

Clear the top layers first

Tiles on higher layers block everything beneath. Prioritise the top of the pyramid.

Avoid trapping pairs

If only two of a tile type remain and both are blocked, you can't finish. Plan ahead.

Unlock the centre

The central column is most constrained. Free it early to open the most future moves.

Match Flowers and Seasons early

These flexible tiles can be removed at any time — use them to simplify the board.

Look for chain reactions

Before clicking, check if removing a pair immediately frees another pair.

Use Hint sparingly

Hint shows a valid pair but not necessarily the best one. Use it to confirm moves remain.

The History of Mahjong

Mahjong originated in China during the Qing dynasty in the 19th century, believed to have evolved from earlier card games. The name (麻將, májiàng) is thought to mean "sparrow." The game reached the Western world in the 1920s, famously selling out at Abercrombie & Fitch in New York when the first imported sets arrived.

Mahjong Solitaire was invented in 1981 by Brodie Lockard at the University of Illinois and popularised globally by Activision's 1986 release Shanghai. Today it's one of the most-played casual games in the world. Regular Mahjong play is associated with improved memory, pattern recognition, concentration, and stress reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Mahjong game completely free?
Yes — 100% free, forever. No download, no account, no in-app purchases. No hints costs, no undo limits.
Can I play on my phone or tablet?
Absolutely. Play Classic Mahjong is fully optimised for touch screens and works on iPhone, iPad, and Android without any app download.
What is the difference between Mahjong and Mahjong Solitaire?
Traditional Mahjong is a competitive game for four players. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player puzzle where you match and remove pairs of tiles from a stacked layout until the board is clear.
What happens when there are no more moves?
The game notifies you. You can click New Game to shuffle a fresh board or use Undo to step back. Not every deal is solvable — experts estimate roughly one in three games of the classic layout cannot be completed.
How many tiles are in a Mahjong set?
A standard Mahjong Solitaire set uses 144 tiles: 36 Character tiles, 36 Circle tiles, 36 Bamboo tiles, 16 Wind tiles, 12 Dragon tiles, 4 Flower tiles, and 4 Season tiles.
Is Mahjong good for your brain?
Yes. Multiple studies have found that regular Mahjong play improves working memory, processing speed, and attention. It is widely recommended as a cognitive exercise, particularly for older adults.
What do the seasonal tile skins change?
Each skin changes the tile colours and the animated sky background — Spring shows a violet night sky with cherry blossom petals, Summer is a deep blue midday sky, Autumn is an amber dusk with falling leaves, and Winter shows a midnight aurora with snowflakes.
